School Tours

Conference attendees have the choice of taking a tour of new schools on the east side of the Portland metro area or a tour on the west side of the Portland / Vancouver metro area.

Tour East

  • Focusing on learning, the school is divided into four neighborhoods, each containing 125 students
  • The cornerstone of the new Community Campus at New Columbia, a mixed-use partnership project located in a recent redeveloped low income housing project
  • Campus is a partnership of the school, Boy and Girls Club, and Portland Parks Community Center in land donated by Portland Housing Authority
  • Parents and Community have access at the entry to the library and a family resource room
  • LEED Gold incorporating storm water management, displacement ventilation, and a demonstration solar panel installation with interactive display and supporting classroom curriculum

Union High School

Union High School

  • Small learning communities (School of Engineering and Environmental Sciences, School of International Studies, School of Visual and Performing Arts, and the School of Leadership and Business)
  • Each learning community functions as independent schools, complete with an administrator, student counselor, and at-risk coordinator
  • Four separate buildings designed to reinforce the individuality of each learning community yet create a cohesive campus that reflects the unity of the entire student body
  • 600 seat auditorium with a fly loft and black box

Aloha Huber Park School

  • New Pre-K-8 replacement school in a suburban community
  • 106,000-square-foot, two-story facility for 900 students including grades 6-8 as an option program with limited enrollment
  • Includes gymnasium, multipurpose room, two music room, commons, full-service kitchen, 9,900 square-feet cover play area and playfields
  • Clusters of four classrooms feature breakout areas for small group instruction
  • Design incorporates day lighting, use of energy efficient systems and wetlands teaching area with water quality control demonstration
  • Exterior courtyard fosters community across diverse population representing twenty three languages

Bonny Slope Elementary School

Bonny Slope Elementary School

  • Complicated site slopes created an interesting split level building design and site parking
  • The northern wing is a two story structure which contains the classrooms, small group instruction spaces and commons areas
  • The commons areas are designed to accommodate 2-3 classrooms, strategically placed for classroom adjacencies and to give the hallways nice articulated flow
  • The central wing contains the main entry and covered walkway, the administration area and the second story library
  • The eastern wing contains the bulk of the public program elements: the cafeteria, gym, stage and music room
  • Natural light is let into the commons and hallway areas from light shelves at the classroom exterior walls which reflect the light through high windows located in the classroom/commons walls
